🇰🇷 Korean Grammar 202: V/A-더라도 (Even if / Although)

In this lesson, we’ll learn how to use the Korean grammar pattern “V/A-더라도”, which means “even if” or “although.”
It’s often used when you want to express that one situation or condition does not affect another.

💡 Meaning

The grammar “-더라도” is used after verb or adjective stems to express that even if the first clause happens or is true, the result or action in the second clause remains unchanged.

In other words, it means “even if,” “although,” or “no matter how…” in English.

It assumes or acknowledges the preceding statement, but shows that it does not influence what follows.

This pattern is often used with adverbs such as 아무리 (no matter how), 비록 (although), and 설사 (even if).
In spoken Korean, “-더라두” is also used.

Rule: It is added directly to the verb or adjective stem, regardless of whether the stem ends in a consonant or vowel.

내일 비가 오더라도 고향에 내려갈 거예요.
Even if it rains tomorrow, I’ll go back to my hometown.
➡ The speaker assumes it might rain, but that doesn’t affect their decision.

2️⃣ Adjective Example
공부하는 것이 힘들더라도 조금 더 힘내요.
Even if studying is difficult, try a little harder.
➡ The situation (“studying is hard”) is acknowledged, but the following action (“keep trying”) stays the same.

나나: 우리 다음 주에 단풍 보러 갈래?
미미: 다음 주쯤 되면 좀 추워질 것 같긴 한데…
나나: 그래도 쌀쌀하더라도 가자! 사진도 많이 찍고 맛있는 것도 먹자.
미미: 좋아! 한국의 가을은 짧지만 정말 아름답잖아.

Nana: Would you like to go see the autumn leaves next week?
Mimi: It might get a bit chilly by then...
Nana: It’s okay. Let’s go even if it’s cold! We can take lots of photos and eat delicious food.
Mimi: Sounds good! Autumn in Korea is short, but truly beautiful.

“비가 오더라도, 춥더라도 꼭 단풍을 보러 가세요.”
Even if it rains or it’s cold, go see the autumn leaves!

   No matter how busy you are, please make sure to eat.


3. 공부하는 것이 (힘들다) 조금 더 힘내요.
   → 공부하는 것이 힘들더라도 조금 더 힘내요.
   Even if studying is difficult, try a little harder.


4. 내일 (비가 오다) 고향에 내려갈 거예요.
   → 내일 비가 오더라도 고향에 내려갈 거예요.
   Even if it rains tomorrow, I’ll go back to my hometown.


5. 날씨가 (춥다) 운동하러 갈 거예요.
   → 날씨가 춥더라도 운동하러 갈 거예요.
   Even if it’s cold, I’ll still go exercise.
