⭐️Korean Grammar 112: ㅎ irregular conjugation

ㅎ irregular conjugation has 2 cases.

1. When the final consonant ㅎ meets an ending that starts with '으'

2. When the vowels in an adjective stem are 'ㅏ,ㅑ,ㅓ,ㅕ' and the final consonant ㅎ meets an ending that begins with '-아' or '-어'.

Let's look at them one by one

1. ㅎ + ‘-으’

- 'ㅎ Irregulation' occurs when the final consonant is 'ㅎ' meets an ending that begins with the vowel '으.'

ㅎ불규칙

① 'ㅎ' drops.
② '으' drops.

1) 하얗다 (white) + 으면 → 하야 (ㅎ drop) + 면 (으 drop) → 하야면
2) 빨갛다 (crimson) + 은 → 빨가 (ㅎ탈락) + ㄴ (‘으’탈락) → 빨간
3) 그렇다 (as such)+ 으니까 → 그러 (ㅎ탈락) + 니까 (‘으’탈락) → 그러니까

2. (ㅏ,ㅑ,ㅓ,ㅕ + ㅎ) + ‘-아/어’

- When the vowels in an adjective stem are 'ㅏ,ㅑ,ㅓ,ㅕ' and the final consonant ㅎ meets an ending that begins with '-아' or '-어'

ㅎ불규칙

① 'ㅎ' drops.
② ‘ㅏ,ㅑ,ㅓ,ㅕ’ + ‘아/어 → ㅐ, ㅒ, ㅔ, ㅖ

- the vowels in the stem 'ㅏ,ㅑ,ㅓ,ㅕ' combines with the ending '-아/어'. So they become 'ㅐ, ㅒ, ㅔ, ㅒ'.

- But, when you look at the changed vowels, they all have the vowel 'ㅣ'.

→ Simply, the vowels in the stem 'ㅏ,ㅑ,ㅓ,ㅕ' combines with the vowel 'ㅣ' instead of '아/어.' The vowel 'ㅣ' attaches after 'ㅏ, ㅑ, ㅓ,ㅕ', they become 'ㅐ, ㅒ, ㅔ, ㅖ.'

I. (ㅏ+ㅎ) + 아/어: 파랗다 (blue) + 아요 → 파라 (ㅎ drop) + 아요 → 파래요
II. (ㅑ+ㅎ) + 아/어: 하얗다 (white) + 어요 → 하야 (ㅎ drop) + 아요 → 하얘요

III. (ㅓ+ㅎ)+ 아/어: 퍼렇다 (deep blue) + 어요 → 퍼러 (ㅎdrop) + 어요 → 퍼레요

• 예외: 이렇다, 그렇다, 저렇다, 어떻다
• 이렇다 (like this) + 어요 → 이레요 (X), 이래요 (O)
• 그렇다 (like that, as such) + 어요 → 그레요 (X), 그래요 (O)
• 저렇다 (like that) + 어요 → 저레요 (X), 저래요 (O)
• 어떻다 (such) + 어요 → 어떼요 (X), 어때요 (O)

IV. (ㅕ+ㅎ) + 아/어: 뿌옇다 (foggy) + 어요 → 뿌여 (ㅎ drop) + 어요 → 뿌예요

3. ‘ㅎ’ Irregular adjectives

: 까맣다 (pitch-dark), 노랗다 (yellow), 파랗다 (blue), 빨갛다 (red, crimson), 하얗다 (white), 누렇다 (deep yellow), 퍼렇다 (deep blue), 뿌옇다 (foggy), 이렇다 (like this), 그렇다 (like that, as such), 저렇다 (like that), 어떻다 (such)
※ ‘ㅎ’ regular adjective: 좋다 (good)

4. Practice

✎ 파란 하늘 (파란: 파랗다 + 은 → ‘ㅎ, 으’ drop)
        (blue sky)
✎ 눈이 와서 세상이 하얘요. (하얘요: 하얗다 + 아요 → ㅎ drop, ㅑ+ㅏ=ㅒ)
        (It snows so the world is white.)

✎ 나나 씨, 기분이 좋아 보여요. (좋아 보이다: 좋다 + 아 보이다) (좋다 = ㅎ regular adjective)
        (Nana, you looks happy.)

✎ 미소 씨 생일 선물로 어떤 꽃을 살까요?
        (What kind of flowers should I buy for Miso's birthday present?)

- 빨간 장미꽃을 사는 게 어때요?
        (Why don't you buy red roses?)

→ 어떤: 어떻다 + 은 → ‘ㅎ, 으’ drop
→ 빨간: 빨갛다 + 은 → ‘ㅎ, 으’ drop
→ 어때요: 어떻다 + 어요 → ㅎ dorp, ㅓ+ㅓ=ㅐ (exception ‘어떻다’)

5. Practice

1. 이렇다 + 은 →  이런
2. 빨갛다 + 으면 →  빨간
3. 저렇다 + 으니까  → 저런
4. 노랗다 + 아요  →  노란
5. 하얗다 + 아서 →  하얘서
6. 퍼렇다 + 어 보이다 →  퍼레보이다
7. 그렇다 + 었는데 →  그랬는데
8. 허옇다 + 었어요 →  허옜어요
9. 좋다 + 아요 →  좋아요
10. 좋다 + 은 →  좋은
